  57. their observation post near Beirut airport.

  67. Beirut, is assassinated as he steps off the elevator near his
  68. office in the university administration building. Islamic Jihad
  69. claims responsibility.

  73. <p>    Two Marines are fatally wounded during a fire fight with
  74. Shi'ite militiamen.

  78. <p>    The U.S. embassy annex in East Beirut is severely damaged
  79. by a car bomb; two Americans are killed.

  82. </p>
  83. <p>    CIA Beirut station chief William Buckley, kidnaped March
  84. 16, 1984, dies in captivity. The body is never released. On Oct.
  85. 4, 1985, Islamic Jihad announce that it killed him.

  87. <p>June 15, 1985
  88. </p>
  89. <p>    American Navy diver Robert Stethem is beaten and shot
  90. aboard hijacked TWA Flight 847, and his body is dumped on the
  91. tarmac at Beirut airport. Thirty-nine other American passengers
  92. and crew are held hostage for 17 days.

  94. <p>April 17, 1986
  95. </p>
  96. <p>    American University librarian Peter Kilburn, who
  97. disappeared Dec. 3, 1984, is found shot to death along with two
  98. British hostages. A nearby note says they were killed in
  99. retaliation for the U.S. air attack on Libya three days earlier.
